So you’ve decided to stay in your home this year but you still want something new. With many of us still working remotely, the desire for a design refresh can be even stronger. What are some ways to make your home the oasis you and your family dream of?
Aesthetics
There’s something magical about a fresh coat of paint, particularly when it’s part of a theme. What makes you happy? Maybe you love the Zen feel of a beach spa. Pale blue walls with sheer white curtains can offer that tranquil feeling without the high price tag. Adding decorative candles and beach-oriented décor such as driftwood pieces can make a master bedroom into a luxury spa experience.
Or perhaps it’s the kitchen that needs updating. Again, a coat of paint can do wonders for wood cabinets that seem dated. If you started with pecan or oak or a dark wood, consider keeping those cabinets but painting them white, gray, or a light blue. Swapping out your appliances and your counter decorations with stainless or lighter colors can open up the entire space.
If you have children, it may be time to change up a bedroom or playroom as they get older. More sophisticated colors that will take them into their teen years can be a great investment whether or not you remain in your current home and will delight your kids!
Structural
Let’s say you’re willing to make a more sizable investment—some minor remodeling may be in order. If you’ve been working from home and that’s meant sitting with your laptop at the kitchen table, now could be a great time to turn a spare bedroom into a proper office. Built-in bookcases, great lighting, and Zoom-worthy background décor can make your workday more productive, while making that work-life divide a bit more clear.
Another smaller remodel can include updating bathrooms, changing to a walk-in shower or a clawfoot tub with new cabinets and flooring. What better way to end a long day than with a restful soak in your new jetted tub?
Don’t Forget the Outside
It may still be cold outside, but now is the time to consider your spring planting. Many vegetables and herbs can be started indoors with an outdoor planting in February and there are a number of trees and flowers that can be started in January. This is the time to plan for a beautiful spring garden with wonderful produce.
Ready for a bit larger investment? A new front door or garage door can completely change the personality of your home and greatly improve its curb appeal.
A new year can mean a new home…or a new look for your current one. By considering your needs—for greater productivity, serenity, or simply some excitement—you can determine the best way to make your current home into your dream home at any level of investment.
